The second entry in my series of favorite female blues singers will cause controversy. A lot of people would say that I should have kept her until #1, because surely Billie Holiday was the greatest ever lady blues singer. I agree to a point. In terms of influence, she clearly has to be number 1. But this list is about what entertains me, and I find Holiday's work thought-provoking and necessary (especially “Strange Fruit”) but not that easy to listen to. I knew she had to be on the list, so I decided to put her on early, to represent her influence on the rest.
