Johansson is Right

Scarlett JohanssonI have not always been a fan of Hollywood actress Scarlett Johansson; she was very good as a little girl in The Horse Whisperer, but seems to have lost her moral compass since then.

But she did something yesterday that should be applauded by all right-thinking people. She resigned as a goodwill ambassador for Oxfam. Why? It is because Oxfam criticized her for her links with the company Sodastream, which has a base in the Judea and Samaria region of Israel; a region often erroneously referred to in the media as the “Occupied West Bank”. In their acceptance of Johannson's resignation, Oxfam claim that the Israeli settlements in this region are illegal.

The international media watchdog, Honest Reporting, which monitors unreasonable media bias against Israel, have shown that these settlements are not illegal. It would be acceptable (though debatable) for Oxfam to suggest that they thought such settlements to be unwise, but to describe them as illegal is completely false.

Scarlett Johansson has shown considerable courage in standing up the right of a company like Sodastream to do business in Israel. She was even compared in a tweet, by activist Reva Aslan, to Hitler and the Nazis – somewhat ironic, considering Aslan's anti-Semitic views.

Johansson has been very clear about why she has resigned from Oxfam. In a statement, her publicity department said “”Scarlett Johansson has respectfully decided to end her ambassador role with Oxfam after eight years. She and Oxfam have a fundamental difference of opinion in regards to the boycott, divestment and sanctions movement.”

If anyone had previously needed a reason not to support Oxfam and not to donate even a penny to them, then this is it. Oxfam subscribe to the so-called BDS movement (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions). And if there is anyone out there reading this, who genuinely wants to support honest Palestinian people in poverty, I think this meme below says it all.

Meanwhile, view Johansson's self-deprecating commercial for Sodastream here.
