Create Space Is No More

I have enjoyed producing books on the CreateSpace platform over the last several years. However, in recent months, we have watched certain features gradually disappear from CreateSpace, while Amazon expanded its KDP publishing service to include paperbacks, as well as Kindle ebooks.

The move might be positive, however, in the way it makes me organize things on two levels; ISBN numbers and Kindle versions.

CreateSpace used to be a platform for all publishing needs, other than ebooks. For example, we used it to publish CDs and DVDs. But the DVD service was moved to Amazon DVD earlier. Now the book service is going as well.

The new service may be for the better – though I notice that there will need to be an increase in price for the books I have with a small number of pages. This latter issue is unfortunate, as I was beginning to put together a series of unit textbooks in Chemistry and Physics. In order to make this affordable, I may now have to wait until I have several units, with which to launch a whole textbook, rather than individual units.

The move might be positive, however, in the way it makes me organize things on two levels; ISBN numbers and Kindle versions.

  1. To make sure that I can easily move products from one platform to another, I might at long last have to invest in purchasing my own ISBN numbers for my own imprint. Then I can watch the market, and move books between the new KDP PoD, and Ingram Sparks, Lulu, and other services.
  2. I might be more pro-active in producing Kindle books. Some books, which are heavy in images, have not been published in Kindle format, because the formatting would need to be completely redone, to allow the images to float. In short, I would need to reproduce them entirely in html format, to get the best out of the format. I have neglected to do this, and probably need to get on with it as best I can.

I guess the world of self-publishing is bound to change every so often. It is inconvenient, but it is not a disaster, and some good may come out of it. But my most valuable commodity is time – I need to find time to organize the move.

Meanwehile, all my books are still available at the Just Six Days website.
